behind the vision
When I was 6 years old, my mother was a member of Djeli Kunda West African Dance and Drum Ensemble, directed by Moussa Diabate. One rehearsal, after many months of watching, I decided to dance. I did not know that this moment was pointing me in the direction of my passion for movement and the body. I toured multiple cities in Canada with Les Amazones de Guinea as a guest artist and acrobat, and pushed my body to extremes as an All-Star Competition Cheerleader and 3 time National Cheerleading Association Champion with Cheer Athletics. Although I was enjoying my movement practices, I felt called to explore more of what my body could express. I earned a scholarship to study Ballet after participating in a Summer program at Dallas Black Dance Academy, and subsequently became a member of both the Academy’s Junior Performing Ensemble, BLOOM, and Dallas Black Dance Theater II. I attended the Science and Engineering Magnet at the Yvonne A Ewell Townview Center, but decided to engineer a different path by becoming a graduate of The Ailey School/Fordham University BFA Program with a Minor in Mathematics.
While in New York City, I had the opportunity to work with choreographers such as Ronald K. Brown, Earl Mosley, Darrell Grand Moultrie, Francesca Harper (Project), and Hope Boykin in collaboration with Wynton Marsalis. Some of my most fulfilling work has been as assistant and associate choreographer to Matthew Rushing, setting works on The Ailey School, Dallas Black Dance Theater, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. I have been able to share my love of dance through teaching for dance schools, workshops, intensives, and colleges in the United States, United Kingdom, Central America, and South Africa. In 2018, I graduated from Pratt Institute with an MFA in Performance and Performance Studies. I was able to synthesize my interests in painting and costume making, as well as make more sense of my relationship to bodies and water. From this season, Liberationiswet. was born with a goal to employ the body towards expression, and ultimately liberation found through crying, spitting, sweating, etc. Liberation of the body looks like pain freedom, maximization of potential, and ease of movement in activity and everyday life. This mission has called me to expand my service to the body by becoming a Certified Zena Rommett Floor Barre Instructor, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Movement Instructor, and a Licensed Massage Therapist/Registered Massage Practitioner with a treatment focus on Fascial Counterstrain.
the mission
From a young age, I understood my body only from the vantage point of what and how much it could produce. This caused me to internalize a direct correlation of praise with effort, therefore, exhaustion. I found myself on an incessant hunt for satisfaction that could not, and does not exist when the relationship with the body is unhealthy.
It wasn’t until I experienced various injuries that I began to fully grasp the concepts of maintaining a healthy body. In learning more about nutrition, spending time in physical therapy clinics, prioritizing sleep, and studying anatomy, I began to experience the monumental impact of multi level care for the body. There is no shortage of spaces that encourage us to go all out and push ourselves past perceived limitations of the body. This is both necessary and valuable, but so is regeneration of the body.
Do you stretch after your workouts?
When was the last time you had a massage?
The reality is that we don’t place the same importance on recovering and slowing down. Whether we realize it or not, the lack of deep listening to our bodies is a major road block toward any progress that we wish to make.
The mission with Body Unbound is to provide a sanctuary for all bodies to rest, reset, and recover. By slowing down and learning to take inventory of your body’s sensations, you can facilitate longevity and create more opportunities for physical pain freedom. Learning about the specific care your body needs can be the catalyst to waking up feeling your best each day. Therapeutic Massage and Fascial Counterstrain help you to stay on top of your routines, and get out ahead of muscle tension, musculoskeletal dysfunctions, and stress. Our small group classes provide a space for you to practice your alignment, build strength, and improve mobility, so that you can create the safest physical environment from which to lead your life.
