fascial counterstrain
“My first experience of Counterstrain was with Ms. Johnson. I described some areas in my back where I felt the most discomfort and immobility. She took a thorough assessment using this technique and carefully tended to my lower back and surrounding muscles that seemed to be contributing factors. There was immediate relief to my surprise.”
about this service
Fascial Counterstrain (FCS) is a specialized manual therapy technique designed by Dr. Brian Tuckey to release tension and restore balance to the fascial system in the body. Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds muscles, organs, and other structures. It plays a vital role in movement and overall health, and restricted fascia due to injury, stress, or poor posture can lead to pain, discomfort, and limited mobility. The goal of FCS is to relieve pain, reduce tension, and improve mobility by addressing abnormal fascial patterns that may contribute to discomfort or dysfunction. This non-invasive technique is often used to treat chronic pain, musculoskeletal dysfunction, and a variety of other conditions.
what to expect?
Initial Consultation and Assessment: The session typically begins with a conversation to discuss your medical history, current symptoms, and areas of discomfort. The practitioner then performs an assessment to evaluate the body’s alignment, movement patterns, and any restrictions in the fascia.
Targeting Specific Areas of Tension: The practitioner will identify specific areas of fascial tension through palpation of scalp and tender points.
Positioning and Gentle Compression: The practitioner will place your body in a specific position that shortens or lengthens the fascial tissue to reduce strain.
Holding the Position: Once the correct position is achieved, you’ll typically remain in this position for a short period of time to allow the fascia to return to a more balanced state.
Feedback and Adjustments: Throughout the session, the practitioner will check in with you to ensure that the pressure and position are comfortable.
Post-Treatment Effects: After the session, you may feel immediate relief, a sense of relaxation, or improved mobility in the targeted area. It is important to drink water and avoid certain activities to allow the body to fully integrate the changes made during the session.
Frequency of Sessions: The number of sessions required will depend on the nature and severity of the issues being treated. Some people experience improvement after just one session, while others may need a series of treatments.
who is it for?
Whether you are recovering from an injury, dealing with chronic pain, or seeking relief from tension and stress, Fascial Counterstrain can help restore the body’s natural alignment and movement patterns. Although the treatment is gentle and pain free, you must have clearance specifically for ‘Deep Tissue Massage’ from your doctor to receive FCS.
why fcs?
Non-invasive & gentle: Unlike other manual therapies, FCS uses a soft, non-forceful approach that focuses on restoring balance without pain.
Effective for a variety of conditions: FCS can address a wide range of musculoskeletal and fascial dysfunctions, including chronic pain, headaches, back pain, and sports injuries.
Holistic healing: FCS not only targets the physical symptoms but also enhances overall well-being by supporting the body's natural healing processes.
how to best prepare?
When preparing for a Fascial Counterstrain session, there are a few things to keep in mind to insure an effective experience:
Consult Your Doctor: It's important to get specific clearance from your doctor to receive a ‘Deep Tissue Massage’ for FCS treatment because changes to fascial structures can exacerbate certain conditions.
Scalp Access: Part of the technique requires access to your scalp. Please refrain from restrictive hairstyles, tight ponytails, or hardened gels on the hair. Braids and twists that are not freshly done allow for a more accurate scan.
Dress Comfortably: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move and be moved freely. Please stay away from tight waist bands, belts, or thick clothing.
Drink plenty of water: Your body will be flushing out excess fluid from the releases through your kidneys, and will benefit from increased hydration to support the process.
Aftercare: Be mindful of consuming caffeine, alcohol, sugar, or other stressors that cause inflammation, as this will delay your body’s ability to heal itself.
